I live in Accra, Ghana where there are fair Ghanaians, dark Ghanaians and people in the middle too, like me. And beauty (at least from my perspective) is not really based on skin colour. Case scenario: I know two girls in the year ahead of me who were completely different in skin colour. One of them is mixed race, or at least has western ancestry while the other is dark. Very dark. Both girls are very beautiful and no one ever compares their beauty. If they put up pictures on facebook, they would both get an equal of “likes” or whatever. (In fact the darker one is more popular for her looks) No one thinks that the fairer one is prettier. It would never come up and never because of skin colour, if anything.

This is not to say that there is no one who says “as for me, I like only fair women” but even then, (I’m now speaking from a man’s view based on the things I’ve heard, so I may be wrong) I think that particular preference (in Ghana) is parallel to a man who says he is attracted to slender girls, or that he likes women with big backsides. I guess there are still idiots who say that they like “fair” women because darker women are not attractive but that’s not a really strong view here. At least I don’t think so.

So I never even knew that there was a “light-skin”-“dark-skin” issue till I joined tumblr. It was not until I saw a poster showing the venue for a “Light skin vs Dark skin” party. And really, it was disgusting. The comment in quotations up there though, is the worst comment I have EVER seen. And frankly, that girl needs to be slapped and imprisoned for a night.

Why? Because you cannot joke with something as scarring as slavery. Are you mad? People frigging died for nothing because of that. People were shot in front of their families, walking into their driveways, hung from trees, burnt to death because they were fighting for the rights of ALL black people. And girl, some of these people who fought so YOU could have the opportunity to log on to twitter and blow such rot, were darker than you!

Apart from the fact that your dark-skinned mother could have been raped by her white master’s son to produce you, light-skinned girl, your half-brother who was dark-skinned and produced out of love, could have been lynched because he tried to runaway.

Point is, one light-skinned girl and one dark-skinned boy dating can look like brother and sister. You are all one people dammit. This is clichéd, and maybe said too much but YES: What sucks is the same people pulling each other down. We are all black people. Light-skinned, dark-skinned. Don’t be stupid and go dissing someone because of colour because your mind, who you are, your heart, your worth is NOT based on your skin colour. So in making derogatory comments about dark-skinned people, you guys have shown your worth. And for me, it’s close to zero.

This is where human selfishness is so apparent that it makes me sick. Although black people in general did not have the same rights as white people in the 60s, the light-skinned ones were treated better. (If you want proof ask me) And that girls comment is reflective of that bull-crap.

Sigh. I really wish I could meet this girl and tell her my piece of mind.
